The Teluk Intan Wedding of the Year Print E-mail

Location: N Bandar Restaurant, Teluk Intan

GPS Coordinates: N 04° 00.476', E 101° 01.102'

From now on, we dare to go anywhere.. even to the most obscure and least popular places. Thank you GARMIN! We left PJ at 4.30pm (after all the dilly dally). It was a great day to travel because the sun was shining bright, clouds were floating in the clear blue sky and there were no signs of an upcoming downpour.

We can go anywhere with GARMIN!

There are many exits to Teluk Intan. We took the exit to Bidor and it was another 30 minutes drive to our destination. Even with the roadsigns, we still trusted our handy GARMIN (by the way, this is not an advertorial by GARMIN). Notice the McDonald's directional signage? You won't get lost if you follow the sign. It probably is the most exciting fast food outlet and the most talk about in sleepy town Teluk Intan. If you are headed to Pulau Pangkor, follow the directions to Pelabuhan Lumut (Lumut Port).

Turn Right to Teluk Intan

By the time we got into Teluk Intan, it was close to 6.30pm. Exactly as expected, we took 2 hours to reach here. Seeing that we still had time to kill and our tummies were growling with hunger, a quick snack would satisfy our pangs. Teluk Intan is famous for a variety of local delights - the stuffed chee cheong fun (steamed rice rolls with fillings), steamed groundnuts and seafood. After having to travel 2 hours on the road, it is only obvious that we experience the local scene...

On the Road

Yups, this is it. The one everyone talks about..

..

..

..

Macca's!

YES! It is truly a Teluk Intan specialty. The Filet-O-Fish was the best! Steam bun with a piece of deep-fried fish fillet with a dollop of tartar sauce and a slice of cheese. Mmmm.. we traveled all the way from PJ and to spoil our 8-course Chinese dinner, for this:

Hungry for Filet-o-Fish

You must think we are so unadventurous. It reminds me of the time when I was studying in the States and I went home for the summer. After months of Denny's, IHOPs and Panda Express, I was in dire need of local hawker food. Guess where my mom and sis brought me for lunch the very next day of my arrival? McDonald's. How... nice.

Back to our travel story: With a snap of a finger, we were all dressed in our dinner attire.

All dressed up!

When we go to the N Bandar Restaurant, we were greeted in Mandarin and Hokkien. Thankfully, Jamie must have prompted her brother to greet the Mandarin bananas (Us!) This is the first time I've gone to a wedding and not know what's on the menu. I could only guess some characters from my limited knowledge; when I was forced to pick up Mandarin at 5 and from mah jong.

Dreymer: Ok, there's gonna be a fish dish....and for #4, I only know the second character and that's 'sum'

Chip: Must be 'hoi sum' (sea cucumber)

Dreymer: Let's wait and see!

How right he was. SEE! We can survive.

Chinese menu.. er...

Dinner was pretty good. It is not your typical 8-course meal because some of the dishes were served in a different style. The TI style! This is shark's fin broth with scallops served with spring chicken.

Sharing a table with a bunch of strangers is no fun. It is like putting yourself in the sahara with hungry cheetahs ready to pounce on its prey. Survival of the fittest best describes the scene at the dinner table. So you can imagine, the good stuffs (i.e. scallops) were all gone when the serving spoon got to us. Nah, let them fight. We'll show them the way of KLites - that we have proper dinner etiquette (and we will bitch about you in our blogs behind your backs!) Haha.

Yums!

Finally, we got to speak to the happy couple. It's my first time meeting David and he's such a nice guy. Friendly and funny. Jamie's a lucky girl. As expected, Jamie's flamboyant choice of gowns.

With Mr & Mrs Ong

Oh, and I can't stand the emcee dressed in red. He's so girly that it'll make you cringe in disgust. Nevermind that. He goes around with a feathered boa trying to dirty dance with the male guests, WITH A SERIOUS FACE and think he is so damn hot. EWWW!

Happy couple

Took a couple of snapshots of their photo album. I think most of the pics were taken in Pangkor Island.

The photo album

Frothy face? Didn't they know getting rabies is not very romantic?

Frothy face?

By the time they got to the 6th dish, it was past 10pm and we had to head back home to Kuala Lumpur. Again, GARMIN was such a big help. It started to pour a little when we entered the NKVE highway. We even stopped by the rest area for some yummy nasi lemak with sotong. All those driving just makes you hungry.

Back to KL

We would love to make another trip to Teluk Intan. It is a quaint li'l treasure that will be added into our list of towns to explore (next to Kuantan and Taiping). Maybe next time, I'll give Macca's double cheese burger a try Smile

That's answering to my site and our short roadtrip!

The site is up and running. We changed servers and I hope that you find the site loading faster than before. On my side, it definitely is and because of that, I will be updating my blog more often. If you left any comments in the past couple of days, I've reposted them under my username - The Day Dreymer. Thank you for being patient with us Smile

Our evening trip to Teluk Intan was definitely too short. We promised Jamie and hubby David that we will be back soon. Jamie has been bugging me for years to make a trip to Teluk Intan and I finally did on her wedding.

Will try to upload my pics tonight and story you about our roadtrip and how weddings are in small town Teluk Intan. And guess what? They finally have a drive-thru McDonald's which is pretty much the big hype in this sleepy bay. I am so mean. I just like to make fun of Jamie's hometown because it makes her mad! Any takers to join us on a roadtrip to Teluk Intan and Pangkor?!

G'night.

A night with Sarah B Print E-mail

If I only I remembered to charge my battery, I would have taken short snippets of Sarah Brightman's ethereal voice. The best I could come out with are pictures from a distance with huge reliance on my Lumix' 10x zoom. Pictures and my review can't do justice to describe her performance. Although it was not as theatrical as her last performance in KL, her voice so powerful, you would still be blown away.

I had a clear view of Sarah from the Royal Box. To tell you the truth, I didn't know that she was performing in KL until I got the tickets! It was part of the Symphony: The World Tour and of course we expected a symphony orchestra ready on stage to accompany the soprano singer. Well, her performance was simply flawless! She sang my favourites like Nessun Dorma and La Luna. It would have made my day if she had included Here With Me and her rendition of  A Whiter Shade of Pale. She ended her performance with Time to Say Goodbye which was pretty predictable.

Testing out the E71.

After an hour of Sarah, we spent the rest of our night at Sultan, Mandarin Oriental. A really nice discovery. At 11ish, it was still pretty empty but the place started to come alive after midnight. We had our white vino and even their tit-bits are a higher class than the usual murukku at uncle bars. After the boys had their game of pool, we were hungry for supper. Just as we left, guess who we saw? Sarah Brightman! We were just 2 feet away from each other. We didn't want to act all 'celebrity oogle crazy' so we pretended we didn't see her. Likewise, I bet she wanted to hide herself from the limelight.

After midnight, our hunger for real meat was apparent. The lust for the beef was so empowering that we had to make our way to Ngau Kee. We salivated over a bowl of beef noodles. As our teeth sunk into the brisket, we knew how weak we were as vegetarians. Damn, I think I've been reading too much vampire books........
