Step-by-Step User Guide
This is a simple user guide for those who wish to use the WordPress (WP) converter to export all you previous posts from WP into Joomla.
Part 1
- Download and run the WP converter.
- Export all your WP posts from the WP control panel and save it into you local computer; "XML Import/Export". Instructions can be found here.
- Browse for the WP xml file under "WordPress Backup".
- Browse for the location where you want to save the exported posts (which you will use to import into Joomla) and give a name to the file ending with a ".sql" extension. In the image above, my exported posts will be saved in C: drive under the name "joomla_import.sql".
- There are a few parameters you should configure before you start the exporting. If you have a standard Joomla 1.5 installation, you can leave the "table prefix" field to its default value unless you have changed the Joomla content table name.
- Enter the Admin ID or any other user's ID in which the WP posts belongs to. Joomla will use this ID as the Author for the imported posts. You can obtain the ID of the user under "User Manager" in Joomla's administrator console. IMPORTANT: Use the User ID and NOT the Username.
- The Section Id and Category Id is where you want to initially group the WP posts during import. You can re-group the imported post once everything is done like any other article.
- "Post Type to Export" means you can choose to only export posts marked (in WP) as "Public", "Private", "Draft" or all. The rest of the posts you choose to ignore will be discarded and not exported into Joomla.
- Check "Preserve WP IDs" if you want to export your WordPress posts with its original ID. This is useful in case you want to export your WordPress comments along with your posts. Some Joomla comment components allow you to import WP comments from the WP XML file but requires the original WordPress post IDs.
- Once you have set all the parameters, hit the "Generate" button and you are done.
- Go to Part 2 of this guide.
Part 2
- Browse to the folder where you have previously saved the converted WP posts. i.e. joomla_import.sql
- Log on to your phpMyAdmin or your database control panel.
- Browse to your Joomla database.
- There should be an option for you to import SQL files into your database. Browse for the sql file in step 1 (part 2) above and import the file.
- Congratualtions you have successfully imported all your WP content into Joomla. You can view all the imported articles under "Article Manager" in Joomla.

Dear Sir/Madame
I saw, and then tried out your converter. It really would be a useful feature, because i would like to move from wordpress too, and i have a lot of posts.
The main problem with the converter: it gets data from the wordpress exported xml file, where formatting (mainly br tags, line breaks) are missing. This way the imported content showes up all messed up in the joomla end.
Are there any possibility to get the line breaks too? So the content would appear in a formatted way? I hope so.
Please, answer, and thanks for your work!
Hi,
One of our readers (Snowman in Post #82) suggested:
"Trouble with paragraph spacing can be solved with the WP plugin PS Disable Auto Formatting. Install and use it on all posts (batch) before exporting to XML. IN this way blank spaces is replaced by that Joomla understands."
Please give this a try and let us know what happens.
